June 6th, 2009
Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
The Ottawa Shaolin Kung Fu Centre celebrated its 10th anniversary on June 6, 2009 at the Mandarin Ogilvie Restaurant.
Our event was a big success, with special guests from the Los Angeles Traditional Shaolin Tiger Kung Fu School, the Wah Lum Kung Fu & Tai Chi Academy of Boston, Lu’s Tae Kwon Do of Ottawa, and delegates from the Embassy of Taiwan.
Our evening kicked off with a traditional lion dance, forms, and set fights, followed by a presentation of the Shaolin Centre’s history in Ottawa which highlighted Sifu Ly’s contributions to both the martial arts and Canadian communities.
Our celebration also included a demonstration by Sifu Derick Lee and his students of the LA school, and by Sifu Mai Du and her students of the Boston school. Sifu Du also presented Sifu Ly with a gift honoring him as a beacon of light to those pursuing traditional Shaolin Kung Fu.
Sifu Ly in turn gave awards to students who have been with the Ottawa Shaolin Kung Fu Centre for 10 years. A presentation featured the school’s fundraising efforts for the Be Tho Orphanage, and a 50/50 draw was held to raise money for the orphanage. Door prizes were also given out, and a 10 course meal served.
We’d like to thank all of our guests for joining us in celebrating 10 years of traditional, tiger style Shaolin Kung Fu in Ottawa. A special thank you goes to all our corporate sponsors and individual supporters who helped us raise almost $4000.00 for the Be Tho Orphanage.
Finally, we’d like to extend our sincerest thanks to all the students, friends and family who volunteered their time and efforts to make our evening a truly memorable one!
